Technology
A major aspect of eComm is Technology. This is something that we started learning from day one. I had never used a Mac before my freshman year in eComm and now I would prefer it over any other brand of computer. I learned how to use nearly all the adobe programs until I narrowed it down to Graphic Design and mainly use Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Indesign. These programs I have grown to love (and sometimes hate), and they have allowed me to create a numerous amounts of visual art that I will always be proud of.Collaboration
Collaboration is another important concept I have learned. When I first began my junior year of Graphic Design I had no idea how close I would become to my classmates, but spending every day together and learning alongside each other has allowed us all to grow very close. Collaboration is one of the keys to being a successful graphic designer, and I've seen that throughout the years. When we worked on a project together, specifically the Homecoming 2016 project, we were divided into groups of two to create a package. We had to collaborate with one another to make sure we were both on the same page and creating a package that looked like a family. Not only did we have to work alongside our partner, but also with our fellow seniors when a problem came up regarding the theme of the dance we had to work together to find a solution. This is a skill that has affected my work and hopefully will continue to aid me in my future career.Communication
Alongside Collaboration is Communication. This is one of the most important parts of working with a client. We have to continually communicate with them in order to create the design they are wanting and to get them all the files they are needed to use those designs. I recently worked with Angela Parks from the Olathe Public Library to create a logo for their new branch called Teen Commons. At first we were not communicating very well and I didn't understand the look and feel she was wanting for her logo. Due to our lack of communication I created logos that didn't go with her theme, and I had to start over again after sending her the first round of concepts. After this she explained to me what she was looking for, and I was able to create six different concepts with color schemes for her to choose from. We continued to communicate through email as she picked out a color scheme and a final concept for the Teen Commons. I then sent her all the files she needed to export the logo onto merchandise. It was this communication that allowed us both to do our work successfully.Project Management
File management was a concept of Graphic Design that I have continuously struggled with throughout my years in eComm. I am already a very unorganized person, and it took until junior year for me to realize that project management can make or break you as a graphic designer. In order to find all of your files and keep them all linked into your projects they must be stored in a place that you can find. I have lost JPG's before due to lack of file management. Although, when it comes to finishing projects and meeting deadlines, I believe I have excelled. Finishing a project on time isn't hard when I genuinely enjoy working on the projects in the first place. One thing that eComm has shown me is that motivation does not come easy, but we must have a good attitude in order to succeed.
Leadership
Leadership is an important word, especially for seniors. Its our job to set and example and be role models. This also applies in the world of eComm and Graphic Design. I see this mostly in critiques. In the beginning I was a little too afraid to put my opinions out their, and sometimes even afraid to take the criticism from others on my own work. It was the seniors in my junior year that changed that for me. They were not afraid to say what they were thinking, and I think that affected how I handle situations now. I would like to say that I am one of the leaders in critiques, specifically because I like them so much. They allow me to see my peers work and help them improve it while they help me improve mine. These leadership skills have given me a sense of confidence that I hope to carry with me in my future.
Strengths & Weaknesses
These four years I have learned so much, and even so I have struggled as well. Something I definitely am weak at is my file management, although I have improved throughout my years. One of my strong suits is definitely typography. This is interesting because it was originally one of biggest weaknesses. I have learned that typography is the most important part of design, and that I needed to start with that before thinking about any other graphics. Realizing this has allowed me to enhance my work with both stellar typography and graphics alongside it. I still need to work on motivating myself even when a project is boring or gets tough. In the past I have slacked on work because I didn't find myself enjoying it, but I still needed to get it done. This is something that I will need to work on in my career, seeing that not everything is going to be easy and fun, but will be worth it in the end.
I hope to carry my graphic design skills with me forever, and continue to create things for myself and the people around me. Although Graphic Design is not the field I'm going into I know that the things I learn will show in my field of study. I hope to allow my creative side to make my life fun and interesting and continue to make me happy.
I would never change anything in eComm other than getting to know the people around me sooner. I have grown very close to my classmates that I'm leaving this year. I wish that I had put myself out there and met them sooner so that saying goodbye wouldn't feel so premature.
eComm has changed my life, and that's all there is to it. This program has given me a place that I will always feel comfortable to laugh in, cry in, be crazy in, and focus in. The people here accept you for who you are no matter what, and it has given me friends and relationships that I will never forget. My teachers have helped me shape myself into both the graphic designer I hoped to be, and the woman I hoped to be. I have spent hours and hours in eComm working on just one thing, and I have never not enjoyed it. I hope that everyone in this program will have the same amazing experience that I have had in my last four years. Thank you eComm, for making high school unforgettable.
