Anatomy of Typography

The first quiz I took in order to figure out my "type", I got the font Contrary. After looking for this certain font for a while, I found that the only one I was able to download was a similar one called Contrary Mary. I noticed while labeling my name in this font, that I couldn't line up the lines of "Cap Height", "X-Height", or "Baseline". The description of Contrary above states that it "doesn't fit into a box". The letters were spread apart and not at even spaced with each other, leaving it kind of tricky to figure out where the letters started and stopped from top to bottom.

The four words that I was given to describe who I am were; Emotional, Assertive, Traditional, and Disciplined. Emotional describes me because I always put my heart and passion into everything I do. Assertive describes me very well because I don't like to sit back and be told what to do. I like to get involved, help and lead. I am disciplined in the ways that I like to save the good things for the end, and that I understand good things come to those who wait.

     This project consisted of us using our skills we learned during the Bouncing Ball animation in AfterEffects, and creating our own inchworm to slide across the screen. It was difficult at some parts because there were so many things you had to remember. A lot of the steps were easy to bypass, but in the end made a big difference on the outcome. We learned how to change the effects in order for our worm to have a shadow, and how to change the body of the worm to make it look realistic.

     For this project we had to make three different versions of a bouncy-ball. We used Photoshop first to create a ball and grass. Using the effects layer to give it a more realistic look. After we finished the basics in Photoshop, we imported it into AfterEffects and positioned it out to make it bounce across the screen. All the while, we were saving all the different versions we were creating. 

     The first bounce was just a ball bouncing up and down in the same place. The second was having the ball gradually slow down and have the bounces get smaller and smaller. The third version was the same as the second, but then we made it go across the frame, stretch/squish when it hit the ground, and tried to make it look at realistic as possible.

Pencil Project

       For our pencil project we had to design three separate pencils. The first pencil was simply a practice, the second was a creative version of your own pencil, and the last was something completely your own to make. I chose to design a guitar and microphone, because I can play and I used to sing in talent shows and perform with my step-mom.
       We learned how to use a lot of different tools, and this was my first time using Adobe Illustrator. Here are some of the biggest take aways that I found:

--connecting separate line segments with Command-J

--filling in shapes with the Live Paint Bucket tool

--deleting certain pieces/segments of shapes or lines with the Direct Select tool

What is Graphic Design?

       When you think of Graphic Design, what do you think of? Advertisements, posters, logos? Graphic Design is much more than just "making things pretty", it is something that makes people think or persuade them to take some kind of action.
       Graphic Design has to communicate something, to make something meaningful with a concept, idea, and the aspects of life flowing through their creation. We use Graphic Design in nearly every aspect of human life. It conveys a message through the form of art and sometimes it's not always beautiful. Having a design that is a little quirky, maybe even boring to you, or little odd is good!

       Concert posters, book covers, TV Ads, all of these things incorporate Graphic Design a crazy amount. What would be one of the main reasons you go to a concert? Yes, you love the band/performer, but what would make you really excited to see the show? Graphic Designers create things to invoke feeling in people and their minds. When people think of Graphic Design it shouldn't just be the thought of video games or messing around on the computer, it should be the thought of creative people coming together to create something artsy, meaningful, and beautiful in it's own type of way.
